At 9:58 PM on October 16th, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien, Taiwan, according to reports from the local meteorological department. Residents across several counties in Taiwan reported feeling the tremors.
The epicenter was located at a latitude of 24.02 degrees North and a longitude of 121.7 degrees East, approximately 8.9 kilometers northeast of the Hualien County government, at a depth of 25.2 kilometers.
The strongest tremors were felt in Hualien County, Yilan County, and Nantou County, where the intensity reached level 3. Other areas such as Taichung City, Taitung County, Hsinchu County, New Taipei City, Miaoli County, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Taoyuan City, and Chiayi County experienced level 2 tremors. Level 1 tremors were reported in Taipei City, Keelung City, Kaohsiung City, Tainan City, and Penghu County.
During the earthquake, a reporter from China News Service felt slight shaking while in a high-rise building in the Datong District of Taipei.
On social media, residents of Hualien County mentioned receiving earthquake alerts on their phones. Additionally, people in Taichung, Taoyuan, Miaoli, and New Taipei reported feeling the quake.
Taiwanese media outlets, including United Daily News and China Times, noted that tremors were felt across 19 counties and cities.
