During a routine press conference held by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council on October 16, a journalist inquired about the ongoing narrative from the United States regarding a supposed “military threat from China.” The reporter pointed out that the U.S. has been promoting Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, continually selling arms and providing military assistance. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has been cooperating with the U.S. in this rhetoric, claiming it will train 400,000 civilians for a “whole-of-society defense” initiative. The spokesperson was asked for comments on this situation.
In response, Chen Binhua, the spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, expressed that the U.S. actions and statements are primarily aimed at selling weapons to Taiwan, serving its domestic military-industrial complex, and are not about safeguarding the Taiwanese people or genuine goodwill towards Taiwan. He cautioned against underestimating the dangers and reckless nature of the DPP government’s separatist ambitions under Lai Ching-te. He emphasized that the Chinese side possesses a strong determination and capability to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Chen pointed out that since assuming office, the Lai administration has pursued independence while feeling insecure, resulting in them becoming willing pawns for external forces. He criticized their alignment with the U.S. to turn Taiwan into a “hedgehog of war” and pushing the Taiwanese populace towards disaster. Now, with the so-called initiative of “whole-of-society defense,” there is an attempt to drag the people of Taiwan into the “Taiwan independence” movement, making them victims of its separatist agenda. He denounced “Taiwan independence” as a perilous dead end, asserting that the separatist forces will ultimately fail and achieve nothing. He warned the Lai administration that their reliance on the U.S. for independence and their militaristic endeavors will only lead to self-destruction and ruin.
