**Interview with Commander Benjamin Audu Francis of the Nigerian Navy and Captain Tom Pycock of the British Military Advisory Training Team**
**Interviewer:** Congratulations on the graduation of 20 personnel from the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service. Can you explain the significance of the Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) training for the Nigerian Navy?
**Commander Benjamin Audu Francis:** Thank you! The VBSS training is vital for enhancing the capabilities of the Nigerian Navy. Organized by the UK Commandos, this training helps us develop the skills needed to combat maritime crimes such as piracy, oil theft, and human and drug trafficking. It empowers us to ensure safe passage for both cargo and individuals on our national and international waters.
**Interviewer:** How long did the training last, and what key skills were participants able to develop?
**Commander Francis:** The training commenced on September 2 and continued for several weeks. During this time, the 20 participants learned essential boarding techniques, participated in practical drills, and practiced real-world scenarios. I’m optimistic that they will effectively apply their new skills to advance their careers.
**Interviewer:** What role did the British Military Advisory Training Team play in this initiative?
**Captain Tom Pycock:** Over the past four weeks, the BMATT focused on enhancing the VBSS capabilities of the NNSBS. Our training included a wide range of skills, from close-quarters combat at the Joint Maritime Training Centre to marksmanship at the range. We concentrated on both long-distance sniper shooting and close-quarter marksmanship with pistols and rifles.
**Interviewer:** How receptive were the participants to the training program?
**Captain Pycock:** The commitment demonstrated by the NNSBS personnel was remarkable. They arrived ready to learn every day, which not only benefited them but also provided valuable learning experiences for us as instructors. They truly are a capable force.
**Interviewer:** Commander Francis, can you elaborate on how this training will improve operational effectiveness?
**Commander Francis:** Absolutely. We have vessels deployed for anti-piracy operations, and the trained officers will be responsible for boarding and searching these ships for signs of maritime crimes. Should they encounter any illegal activities, they’ll have the authority to interrogate and apprehend those involved.
**Interviewer:** Do you anticipate more training opportunities in the future?
**Commander Francis:** I sincerely hope so. We’re thankful to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, our Chief of Naval Staff, for approving this training, and we look forward to continued collaboration with the BMATT for future training initiatives. This partnership is essential for our ongoing growth and success.
**Interviewer:** Thank you both for sharing these insights. Your work is crucial for enhancing Nigeria’s maritime security.
