RJ Barrett has faced an early setback in the Toronto Raptors’ preseason, as he exited the team’s first exhibition game with a right shoulder injury. The organization announced on October 8 that Barrett will not participate in any further preseason games, with updates on his recovery to be provided after the preseason. His availability for the season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers remains uncertain.
In the Raptors’ opening preseason game, which they won 125-98 against the Washington Wizards, Barrett showcased his talent before the injury. He played 14 minutes, scoring 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, making him the highest scorer in the game despite his early exit. The Raptors confirmed that Barrett suffered a sprain to the acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder, which is located where the clavicle meets the scapula.
At just 24 years old, Barrett hails from Toronto and made a return to his hometown team last season through a trade with the New York Knicks. His teammate, Immanuel Quickley, also transitioned from the Knicks to the Raptors this summer, signing a five-year, $175 million maximum contract. The duo was expected to be a key combination for the Raptors, but Barrett’s injury has complicated those plans.
As he enters his sixth NBA season, Barrett played a total of 58 games last year between the Knicks and the Raptors, averaging 18.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Additionally, he is a member of the Canadian national basketball team set to compete in the Paris Olympics this year.
