On October 23, 2023, a notable journey began as over 400 members of various Hong Kong compatriot associations from Longgang District, Shenzhen, boarded the “Fuxing” high-speed train to Beijing for a seven-day educational tour focused on national identity and cultural heritage.
The first destination of the group was the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) in Beijing. “The moment I stepped into the Forbidden City, I was struck by its grand scale. Each item inside tells a story of historical significance, reflecting the former glory of this place and its deep cultural heritage. We all felt immense pride in being part of the Chinese nation, which strengthened our resolve to pass on and promote traditional Chinese culture,” said Xiao Zhenxiong, president of the Hong Kong Pingdi Compatriot Association.
You Yanmei, a young member of the Hong Kong Shenzhen Longcheng Association, expressed her awe as she gazed up at the magnificent buildings, stating, “From the rhythmic architecture, you can truly appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture. It is a point of pride for the Chinese nation and a precious cultural heritage for all humanity.”
As the group ambled along the Great Wall at Juyongguan, they were mesmerized by the vibrant autumn foliage surrounding them. Together, they enthusiastically proclaimed “We love our motherland!” and visited a monument inscribed with the phrase “You’re not a true hero if you have not been to the Great Wall.” Liao Heshun, president of the Hong Kong Shenzhen Yuanshan Association, recalled his experience two decades later, saying, “Touching the stones of the Great Wall again brought back many memories, making the echoes of history more profound.”
The next morning, the study group set out for Tiananmen Square to witness the national flag-raising ceremony. As the bright five-starred red flag ascended, emotions ran high, and group members joined thousands of others in singing the stirring “March of the Volunteers.” Zhao Jincheng, a young member of the Hong Kong Longgang Association, shared, “Watching the flag being raised in Tiananmen Square carries a unique significance. Seeing the national flag rise slowly while singing the national anthem made me feel an even closer connection to my homeland.”
Song Qiming, the study group leader and a member of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, explained that the Longgang compatriot associations have always been steadfast in supporting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government in its lawful governance. He emphasized their love for their homeland and their desire to showcase the remarkable achievements of the nation over the last 75 years through this joint event.
According to Chen Guoqi, the secretary-general of the study group and president of the Longgang Association, organizing such an event was challenging but immensely meaningful. “Being able to let over 400 compatriots experience the history and accomplishments of our motherland firsthand makes every effort worthwhile.”
The group also visited the Museum of the Communist Party of China to learn about the notable history of the Party over the past century. Participants examined invaluable historical photographs, artifacts, and vivid historical videos, advocating for more Hong Kong youth to participate in similar educational experiences.
The visit extended to the China Aviation Museum, where members explored the development of the People’s Air Force, recognizing the nation’s journey from “standing tall” to “becoming rich” and now “gaining strength” over the past 75 years.
On a visit to the drill ground of the People’s Liberation Army Honor Guard, the members were captivated by the impressive march and military music. “The resilience of the honor guard during training left a deep impression on me. I felt a visceral connection to the strength and bravery of the PLA; they are indeed forged from steel,” reflected Zhang Jianrong, president of the Hong Kong Bantian Association.
The study group also enjoyed a visit to the China Arts and Crafts Museum, observed the masterpieces of the country’s artisans since its founding, and explored the historical texts that have withstood the test of time at the National Version Museum. They witnessed the transformative journey of Shougang Park from an industrial site to a venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Amidst this rich itinerary, the cultural depth of the capital and its rapid modern development left a lasting impression on the attendees. Many expressed that the educational experience was unforgettable and profound, reinforcing their commitment to patriotism and their shared responsibilities in realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
