On October 17th, a significant technology conference was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, aimed at summarizing the province’s achievements in technology innovation, recognizing outstanding organizations and individuals in this field, and outlining strategies for building a strong technology innovation framework in the new era.
During the conference, Guangdong Provincial Party Secretary Huang Kunming delivered an important speech, emphasizing the need for Guangdong to seize historical opportunities presented by a new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation. He urged participants to be resilient in achieving high levels of technological self-reliance and to cultivate a competitive spirit against global leaders. Additionally, Huang articulated the importance of identifying effective pathways for achieving this self-reliance and maximizing the province’s political and institutional advantages. He called for a focus on self-innovation and market-driven strategies to create a seamless loop of technological innovation.
Huang further explained that Guangdong should deepen its understanding and practical application of becoming a strong technological nation. He stressed the need to build robust systems for technology innovation capacity, technology transfer, intellectual support, and governance, all aimed at stimulating and unleashing innovation across society.
Provincial Governor Wang Weizhong echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of developing the Greater Bay Area as an international technology innovation center. He emphasized efforts to implement foundational and applied research initiatives, enhance the construction of national laboratories, and strengthen the role of enterprises in technological innovation. Wang also mentioned the need for reforms to empower scientific achievements, accelerate the establishment of validation platforms, and develop a technology finance mechanism supportive of innovation.
A special video showcasing Guangdong’s technological efforts was presented during the event. Wang Xi, a member of the provincial standing committee and Minister of United Front Work, read a notice regarding the 2023 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Awards. Provincial leaders, including Huang Kunming, Wang Weizhong, Huang Chuping, Lin Keqing, and Meng Fanli, presented awards to the honorees. Notable speakers included Xue Qikun, recipient of the National Supreme Science and Technology Award, and Xu Yigang, recognized for his outstanding contribution to the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, as well as Gao Wen, who received the Special Award for Technological Progress.
