On October 23, the Central Meteorological Administration reported significant weather changes across China, largely influenced by ongoing cold air systems. This morning, several regions experienced temperature drops ranging from 4 to 8 degrees Celsius. In northern and eastern Beijing, northeastern Hebei, and western Liaoning, some areas saw temperature decreases exceeding 10 degrees Celsius. Starting today, temperatures in the central and eastern regions are expected to stabilize and begin rising. However, another wave of weak cold air will affect the country beginning October 25.
This morning, the Central Meteorological Administration also issued a blue alert for typhoons and a yellow alert for strong winds at sea. Typhoon “Tammy,” the 20th of this year, is anticipated to pass over the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines tonight into tomorrow, and then it is expected to enter the eastern South China Sea by late October 24. Due to the combined effects of this typhoon and the cold air, the eastern and southern maritime areas of China will experience strong winds in the next 24 hours. Winds along the coast of Fujian, the western coast of Taiwan, the Taiwan Strait, areas east of Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, and parts of the eastern South China Sea could reach levels 9 to 10, with gusts of 11 to 12. Heavy rain, including localized torrential downpours, is expected in eastern Taiwan.
Meteorological experts are warning that Typhoon Tammy, initially guided westward by moist air from the southern side of the subtropical high, will strengthen to typhoon intensity (35-40 m/s) as it moves towards the South China Sea. By around October 27, it is expected to combine with cold air, leading to sustained strong winds. Operations in affected marine areas and vessels are advised to take precautions against the winds.
Additionally, today from daytime to night, light to moderate snow or sleet is forecasted in parts of northern and southern Tibet, southwestern Qinghai, eastern Jilin, and the Altay region of Xinjiang, with some areas in Altay potentially experiencing heavy snowfall.
