China News Network Commentary- Eliminate the evil roots of trafficking and speed up justice

On October 25, the Guiyang Intermediate People’s Court in Guizhou Province conducted a retrial regarding the child trafficking case involving Yu Huaying, resulting in a death sentence for her.

On the same day, the last child from the “Mei Yi case” was located, reuniting nine families. Earlier in April 2023, the key perpetrators of the “Mei Yi case,” Zhang Weiping and Zhou Rongping, were executed.

These developments send a powerful message: “Only by punishing evil can we promote good.” This sentiment resonates deeply, especially considering that Yu Huaying was involved in the trafficking of 17 children, leading to the tragic separation of 12 families. The parents of Yang Niuhua tragically succumbed to depression. Even for those reunited, the scars of years of anguish are hard to erase, and the lives of the children who were trafficked have been irrevocably altered. Disturbingly, Yu Huaying displayed cold indifference and a lack of remorse in facing her crimes.

In response to such egregious acts, the death penalty serves as a critical deterrent and warning. This case exemplifies the judicial system’s commitment to severely punish human trafficking, effectively countering any notion among perpetrators that they might evade justice. Regardless of how carefully such crimes are concealed, they ultimately carry significant consequences. This also acts as a form of solace for the trafficked children and their families; justice serves as a shared hope, reinforcing that no wrongdoing should go unpunished, and every act of injustice should be addressed.

During an interview, Yang Niuhua, who played a part in bringing Yu Huaying to justice, shared a poignant thought: “The bravery of the individual is called heroism, the bravery of the community is celebrated, but national strength lies in the rule of law.”

Over 20 years ago, police faced obstacles from villagers while rescuing trafficked women, highlighting the challenges in combating trafficking. Achieving a society free from trafficking demands coordinated efforts across all sectors of society.

To truly eradicate the pain caused by trafficking, we must not only strike hard but also eliminate the root causes that enable such crimes. For instance, addressing the difficulties in penalizing buyers is still a significant challenge, and many advocate for equal punishment for both buyers and sellers. Additionally, traditional beliefs that favor sons and rely on children for elderly care continue to thrive, indicating a need for more robust social management reforms.

In 2023, the number of trafficking cases in the country decreased by 66.6% compared to 2019, marking significant progress in combating this crime. However, new issues such as illegal adoption schemes have emerged. The challenge now lies in swiftly and effectively addressing trafficking crimes to accelerate justice. This endeavor requires not just individual bravery but also a collective societal and governmental effort.
