On October 15, an Air India flight made an emergency landing in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, Canada, in the early hours of the morning.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nunavut, the flight was en route from New Delhi, India, to Chicago, USA, when it had to land in Iqaluit around 5:21 AM local time. All 211 passengers and crew members aboard safely disembarked and were transferred to Iqaluit International Airport.
This incident has now been handed over to the federal investigative division of the RCMP’s Northwest Territories Arctic unit.
In a statement on the same day, Air India noted that the flight was the target of an “online security threat,” prompting the precautionary decision to land in Iqaluit. Both the aircraft and passengers are being re-screened as per regulations.
Air India also mentioned that they, along with several other local airlines, have recently received various threats. Although these threats were later deemed to be hoaxes, the airline emphasized that all threats are treated seriously by responsible carriers. The airline stated that it is fully cooperating with the authorities to investigate the origins of these threats and reserves the right to pursue legal action against those responsible.
