Yinka Olatunbosun:
Can you tell us about the exciting upcoming exhibition at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University?
Absolutely! We’re thrilled to announce the opening of “Collecting Now: Perspectives on Contemporary Art Collecting in Nigeria,” which will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024. This groundbreaking exhibition sheds light on the unique personal and curatorial journeys of six influential Nigerian art collectors. Their passion, vision, and dedication have played a crucial role in shaping the contemporary Nigerian art landscape.
Who are some of the notable collectors featured in this exhibition?
The exhibition recognizes the importance of collectors as key figures in the art ecosystem. We are proud to feature works from Prince Yemisi Shyllon, Kola Aina, Gbenga and Aisha Oyebode, Dotun Sulaiman, Adeniyi Adenubi, and Eyamba Dafinone. Leading this impressive group is Prince Yemisi Shyllon, a foremost collector whose transformative contributions to the museum and the broader Nigerian art scene have helped elevate the status of Nigerian art globally.
What can visitors expect in terms of the artwork displayed?
Visitors will encounter over 80 carefully curated works that span painting, sculpture, and mixed media. These pieces reflect the diverse voices of contemporary Nigerian art, providing a rare opportunity for engagement with the distinct tastes and curatorial visions of the participating collectors. It’s more than just an exhibition of beautiful artworks; it’s an exploration of the vision and passion behind them.
Dr. Jess Castellote, the Director of YSMA, has remarked on the significance of this exhibition. Can you elaborate on that?
Certainly! Dr. Castellote emphasized that “Collecting Now” is not just about showcasing art; it’s about understanding the remarkable collectors involved—who are not merely buyers but also patrons and storytellers. They are shaping the future of contemporary Nigerian art and how it will be remembered. Their collections mirror their deep commitment to supporting artistic expression, preserving cultural heritage, and influencing the evolution of contemporary Nigerian art.
What role do collectors play in the broader context of Nigerian art, especially at an international level?
As “gatekeepers” of artistic expression, collectors have been instrumental in elevating Nigerian art both domestically and on the world stage. Kola Aina, Chairman of the YSMA Advisory Board and a participating collector, noted that the “Collecting Now” exhibition reveals the profound impact collectors have in shaping the artistic canon. Our discerning choices help to preserve our cultural heritage and promote the vibrant expressions of African art.
When does the exhibition take place, and what can attendees look forward to at the opening reception?
“Collecting Now” will run from October 26, 2024, to February 28, 2025. We warmly invite the public to join us for the opening reception on Saturday, October 26, at 2 PM at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Pan-Atlantic University. It promises to be an inspiring event!
