In an exclusive interview with China News Service, Choltis Dhirathiti, the Executive Director of the ASEAN University Network, emphasized the significance of cultural exchange in strengthening the relationship between China and ASEAN. With 2024 designated as the “Year of China-ASEAN Cultural Exchange,” Dhirathiti highlighted that this exchange is a vital pillar of their partnership, fostering mutual understanding and trust while promoting socio-economic development.
Dhirathiti pointed out that Southeast Asia and East Asia share common cultural heritage, with many overlapping values, particularly in their emphasis on harmonious human development. This common ground provides a strong foundation for enhancing cultural cooperation between the two regions. He advocates for increased cultural exchanges to preserve these shared cultural ties.
According to Dhirathiti, interactions among students, teachers, researchers, and university administrators will deepen mutual understanding within the region and promote peace and development. He believes that ASEAN students’ understanding of the cultures of China, Japan, and South Korea can contribute to regional peace in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
The ASEAN University Network, established in 1995, aims to enhance teaching and research across the region and strengthen collaboration with other major partners. Over time, it has evolved into a significant platform for cooperation among leading Southeast Asian universities and has expanded partnerships with institutions in China, Japan, and South Korea.
Furthermore, Dhirathiti noted that the rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence technologies poses new challenges for higher education. He stressed the need for universities in Southeast Asia and East Asia to proactively address this technological shift by developing effective policies to ensure that their educational systems can adapt, while also seeking solutions through international cooperation.
