A special exhibition tour commemorating the 130th anniversary of the birth of Lu Yanzhi was held at Tsinghua University

On October 27, an important exhibition titled “Tribute to the Master: Commemorating the 130th Anniversary of Lü Yanzhi’s Birth” was launched at the Tsinghua University School of Architecture in Guangzhou. This exhibition aims to honor the remarkable contributions and timeless achievements of the renowned modern architect Lü Yanzhi. It will be open to the public until November 19.

Lü Yanzhi, known as the visionary behind the design of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou, stands as a distinguished figure among China’s first professional architects. This year marks the 130th anniversary of his birth; notably, he studied at Tsinghua School (the predecessor of Tsinghua University) from 1911 to 1913.

During his brief life spanning just 35 years, Lü Yanzhi left an indelible mark on Chinese architecture through his unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, artistic creativity, and commitment to excellence. His two memorial buildings represent a perfect fusion of traditional forms and modern techniques, establishing him as a foundational figure in modern Chinese architecture—a title bestowed upon him by scholars.

The special exhibition is a collaboration between the management center of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Nanjing, having previously been showcased in both cities. Centered around the theme “Tribute to the Master,” the exhibition features a wealth of visual materials and precious historical documents that comprehensively highlight Lü Yanzhi’s life and architectural works.

The exhibition is organized into three parts. The first section, titled “A Scholar and Bold Architect,” delves into Lü Yanzhi’s background and academic pursuits, revealing his immense talent and determination. The second section, “Two Major Sun Yat-sen Memorial Buildings Forged by His Life,” narrates how Lü Yanzhi’s exceptional designs and relentless efforts established the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Memorial Hall as models of modern Chinese architecture. The third section, “Exploring the Path of Modern Chinese Architecture,” showcases Lü Yanzhi’s innovative spirit and profound impact in integrating Eastern and Western architectural styles and advancing the modernization of architecture in China.
