On October 19, the cast and crew of the film “Clouds Above Clouds” arrived in Guangzhou for a promotional event. Notable figures like Li Yugang and Sun Xiaolei participated in a meet-and-greet, where they shared insights and stories from behind the scenes of the movie while engaging personally with the audience.
The film, which premiered on October 18, marks Li Yugang’s directorial debut. It features a talented ensemble cast, including Lü Xingchen, Liang Yongqi, and Li Yugang, alongside supporting artists such as Ai Liya, Song Xiaoying, Xu Wei, Sun Xiaolei, and Chen Shuyun. The producers are Cheng Qingsong and Guo Meiqing, with the screenplay co-written by Cheng and Li.
“Clouds Above Clouds” tells the story of Qiu Shi, a girl from a small town in Jiangnan, who faces upheaval in both her family and career. In her time of need, her childhood friend Qing Yun and mentor Yin Chen step in to support her, each in their own unique ways.
Filmed in the picturesque Jinyun County of Lishui, Zhejiang, the movie beautifully captures the region’s misty landscapes and highlights cultural landmarks, such as the Huangdi Shrine. A significant aspect of the film is its incorporation of Wuju opera, with both Qiu Shi and Yin Chen being performers. The film features captivating excerpts from the traditional opera “The Legend of the White Snake,” showcasing the elegance of Chinese opera and celebrating traditional culture.
Li Yugang, who has extensively studied opera, emphasized the importance of integrating traditional arts into the film’s narrative. He aimed to weave Eastern aesthetics and subtle expressions into the project, giving the film a unique character.
As a first-level actor at the National Opera and Dance Theatre of China, Li has a distinctive approach to blending traditional culture with contemporary art, forming a unique aesthetic that reflects Eastern beauty. Directing “Clouds Above Clouds” marks a significant milestone in his artistic journey.
“This film embodies Chinese aesthetics. I believe my movies should not only provide emotional resonance but also enhance the audience’s aesthetic experience,” Li stated.
So far, “Clouds Above Clouds” has completed promotional events in several cities, including Changchun, Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. Many viewers have expressed their emotional connection to the film’s themes of love and nostalgia, praising its rich Eastern charm and aesthetics.
Li also expressed a desire to collaborate with prominent Cantonese opera artists, such as Zeng Xiaomin, to bring Cantonese opera to the big screen in future projects.
